MegaFon and Street Child United to Hold Future Depends on You Street Child World Championship on Eve of Russia 2018 World Cup

22 June 2017, Moscow. MegaFon CEO Sergey Soldatenkov and John Wroe, CEO of the charity Street Child United (UK), signed a memorandum of understanding on holding the Street Child World Cup: The Future Depends on You. The event will take place in Moscow in May 2018. This is the first time a competition of this level has been held in Russia; it will involve teams from 22 countries.

In 2018, on the eve of the FIFA World Cup in Russia, the Future Depends On You open Russian nationwide football tournament for orphans, which MegaFon has been holding for 12 years already, is going global. Twenty four teams of boys and girls aged 14 — 17 will meet in Moscow to compete for the title of world champion.

MegaFon will invite four teams to play: the winners of the 12th Future Depends On You championship in the senior age category — Galaktika from the Smolensk region, a Russian national girls team, and also a team each from both Tajikistan and Belarus. Teams from other countries will be selected by an international partner, the charity Street Сhild United, in association with Save the Children. The geographic spread of teams is impressive and will include players from Belarus, Brazil, Burundi, Canada, Egypt, England, Indonesia, Kenya, Liberia, Mauritius, Mexico, Nepal, the Philippines, Russia, Tajikistan, Tanzania, Uganda, Ukraine, the USA, Zimbabwe and other countries.

The first ever Future Depends On You world cup for street-connected children and orphans will result in the creation of a global platform for disadvantaged children who deserve to have their voices heard in today’s society so that they have equal chances of succeeding in life.

MegaFon CEO Sergey Soldatenkov commented: “Football is a very hot topic right now in Russia: as we speak, the Confederations Cup is being held in four cities and next summer Russia will host the FIFA World Cup. We have been running the Future Depends on You football tournament for orphans since 2005 to give children without parents a chance at success and the opportunity to shape their own fates. Next year orphans from 22 countries will get that chance as well. We are thankful for the trust Street Child United has placed in us and are pleased to work together with this international charity. Sir Alex Ferguson, the most successful manager in the history of British football, also supports the initiative: “The Street Child World Cup is at the centre of football events, creating equal conditions for children who have been shunned by society for too long. I am really looking forward to this championship and think it will help each of the children make themselves heard to the world.”

The Street Child World Cup: The Future Depends on You will be covered in Russia by nine nationwide news partners: the Russia 24 news channel, Match TV sports channel, sports news agency R-Sport, Sovsport. Football magazine, Sport FM radio, sports site Championat, news site Vesti.ru, photo-based news site BigPicture.ru and the Russian Federation of Sports Journalists.

MegaFon was selected to be the telecom infrastructure supplier for facilities for the 2017 Confederations Cup and 2018 World Cup.
